Airedale Terrier

Airedale Terriers are very energetic and intelligent dogs. These dogs are commonly seen in the show ring in breed conformation competitions. They were first bred for hunting but are now excellent companions and family dogs.

Common Health Issues In Airedale Terriers

Most Airedale Terriers are very healthy. Some of the few genetic and health conditions that could be seen in Airedale Terriers are:

  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): This eye disease causes a gradual deterioration of your dog's retina. When the disease starts, your dog may only seem blind at night. As the disease progresses, they will also lose their eyesight during the day. Many dogs will quickly adapt to their limited or lost vision if their surroundings remain the same.
  • Epilepsy: Airedale Terriers can be epileptic. This is a disease that can cause your dog to have seizures. Epilepsy can easily be treated and managed with daily medication but cannot be cured. Many dogs with epilepsy can live a long and healthy life.
  • Elbow Dysplasia and Hip Dysplasia: Hip and elbow dysplasia are extremely common in this breed. It occurs when the joint sockets do not properly form, which can cause their elbow or hip to pop out. If your dog has dysplasia, their limbs may be in pain or cause them to limp. Your vet can discuss what can be done to help manage the signs of pain and help decrease arthritis formation so that your Airedale Terriers can live a long and happy life.

All of these issues will need constant care and monitoring to help keep your Airedale Terrier healthy and happy. If you notice anything wrong with your Airedale Terrier, they should see a vet right away. Some issues can be life-threatening.
