Border Collie

Border Collies are popular herding dogs. These dogs are friendly, brilliant, and active family dogs. They are also great dogs to live on a farm. They will need frequent grooming and baths to help keep their fur clean with their long hair.

Common Health Issues In Border Collies

Most Border Collies are very healthy. Some of the few genetic and health conditions that could be seen in Border Collies are:

  • Elbow Dysplasia and Hip Dysplasia: Hip and elbow dysplasia are extremely common in this breed. It occurs when the joint sockets do not properly form, which can cause their elbow or hip to pop out. If your dog has dysplasia, their limbs may be in pain or cause them to limp. Your vet can discuss what can be done to help manage the signs of pain and help decrease arthritis formation so that your Border Collies can live a long and happy life.
  • Hypothyroidism: This occurs when your dog has low thyroid levels. These dogs tend to sleep more and usually have an enlarged abdomen. Most dogs with hypothyroidism can easily be treated with daily medication.
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): This eye diseases cause gradual deterioration of your dog's retina. When the disease starts, your dog may only seem blind at night. As the disease progresses, they will also lose their eyesight during the day. Many dogs will quickly adapt to their limited or lost vision if their surroundings remain the same.

All of these issues will need constant care and monitoring to help keep your Bearded Collies healthy and happy. If you notice anything wrong with your Border Collies, they should see a vet right away. Some issues can be life-threatening.
