Most Common Health Issues of Pet Rats

External parasites can be a problem with any type of pet. Mites, including ear mites, tropical rat mites, and rat fur mites, are especially problematic in pet rats. The best way to keep your pet rat free of mites is to keep the cage meticulously clean and make sure if one of your rats has mites that you keep each of your pet rats in a separate cage. That is because they can easily transfer mites and other types of external parasites to each other.

You may also notice lice, fleas, or ticks on your pet rat although these are less common than mites. If you suspect that your pet rat has one of these external parasites, don’t hesitate to visit your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Some parasites require medication to kill and eliminate from your pet’s body.

One great way to help prevent mites is to freeze your rat's bedding for 48 hours before putting it in the cage. This will kill any mites that are in the bedding.

Your pet rat could also develop a skin infection by biting or scratching at a wound or parasite. When an infection does occur, it’s typically due to bacteria invading the skin. The most common places for skin infections to occur are on the head or neck. Pet rats with a weakened immune system are at the greatest risk for this issue.
