My puppy does not lift his leg to urinate. Is there something wrong with him? When will he start lifting his leg?

Seth,

I have a 7-month old dog named “Duke” and my mother says there is something “off” with him because he does not lift his leg to urinate. I think he is still too young. At what age will he stop squatting and start lifting his leg?

Aimee

Your dog is just fine. He may or may not adopt the lifting of the leg to urinate and instead stick with squatting. Many male dogs pick up this behavior from watching other older male dogs do it. Some veterinarians think this may be due to lower testosterone levels and others think it is behavioral. Sometimes even females lift their legs to urinate. Your dog will be just fine whether he lifts his leg or not.
