Dear Seth,

Paul

Dear Paul,

The smelling of the ears sounds like there is something going on in there. Smell can come from an infection and usually yeasty in smell. I know that sounds gross but when you smell it once, you will always recognize it. Is the ear swollen on the Pinna (the pointy part)? Does it feel like a pillow in there? If it does, this is what is called an aural hematoma. This is not a dangerous condition, but you should consult your veterinarian. This occurs when the dog shakes his head and blood accumulates between the cartilage and the skin of the ear flap. This is caused by damage to the cartilage from repetitive shaking of the head or scratching. The known causes include ear infections, ear mites and fleas. I hope this gave you an understanding of what is going on. Your vet will give you the appropriate treatment plan to help your dog.
