Curly-Coated Retriever

Curly-Coated Retrievers are very energetic dogs that love to play and run. This breed is great with families as they love to be the center of attention. They're also commonly used as hunting dogs due to their intelligence and obedience. They are quick learners who love to pick up a new trick or two.

The Curly-Coated Retrievers weigh about 50 to 75 pounds and commonly come in three different colors: Yellow, black, and chocolate. They are very easy to identify with their very tight curls. They have one of the curliest coats of all the Retrievers. While they may have a very easy-going personality, they need a lot of exercise. Curly-Coated Retrievers should spend a few hours each day running and playing so that they can stay physically fit and mentally stimulated.

Common Health Conditions for Curly-Coated Retrievers

Most Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are very healthy and hearty dogs but, there are a few health conditions that they are predisposed to, such as:

  • Elbow and Hip Dysplasia: Hip and elbow dysplasia are extremely common in this breed. It occurs when the joint sockets do not properly form, which can cause their elbow or hip to pop out. If your dog has dysplasia, their limbs may be in pain or cause them to limp. Your vet can discuss what can be done to help manage the signs of pain and help decrease arthritis formation so that your Labrador can live a long and happy life.
  • Hypothyroidism: Hypothyroidism is an under-functioning thyroid gland. If your dog does not have enough thyroid hormone circulating within their body, they will be lethargic and often overweight. Your vet can run a blood test to check their thyroid levels and start them on thyroid supplements if it is low.
  • Obesity: Curly-Coated Retrievers tend to become overweight easily. They do need plenty of exercises to keep fit and healthy. Also, making sure that you feed them an appropriate diet will keep them from gaining weight.

If you notice that your Curly-Coated Retrievers are having issues with mobility, it would be best for them to see your vet. These few conditions will need continual medical care and attention for your Curly-Coated Retrievers to stay healthy and happy.
