Chinese Shar-Pei Pet Insurance

Chinese Shar-Pei

Chinese Shar-peis are known for the wrinkles on their face. This breed is originally from China and bred as guard dogs. These dogs will need plenty of training and socialization as they do not tolerate strangers very well.

Common Health Issues In Chinese Shar-pei

Most Chinese Shar-peis are very healthy. Some of the few genetic and health conditions that could be seen in Chinese Shar-pei are:

  • Infection of facial folds: Chinese Shar-peis have many wrinkles. These folds can easily grow bacteria and yeast causing your dog to develop infections.  You may have to clean these folds every day, and in severe cases, your dog may need to see your vet for antibiotics to help keep this area clean and dry.
  • Eye Issues: Chinese Shar-peis tend to have eyelids that roll inward. This can cause your dog's eyelashes to rub the surface of their eyes. This will cause your dog to have eye infections and watery discharge that you must clean each day.
  • Shar-Pei Fever: This is also known as swollen hock syndrome. This condition causes swelling of the hock joint and results in your dog not wanting to move, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and shallow breathing. Many Chinese Shar-Pei will also have an unexplained fever with temperatures as high as 103 to 107 degrees. This condition usually starts around 18 months, but it can appear when your dog is an adult. The fever usually lasts 24 to 36 hours with medications to reduce fever and pain.

All of these issues will need constant care and monitoring to help keep your Chinese Shar-pei healthy and happy. If you notice anything wrong with your Chinese Shar-pei, they should see a vet right away. Some issues can be life-threatening.
