Black Russian Terrier

Black Russian Terriers are large breed dogs that are also known as Choryni Terriers. These large dogs were first bred as military and working dogs in Russia. These are very energetic and lively dogs. They will need plenty of exercise to prevent them from destroying things when left alone. This breed can also be a great family dog as they are very active and very protective of their pack.

Common Health Issues In Black Russian Terrier

Most Black Russian Terriers are very healthy. Some of the few genetic and health conditions that could be seen in Black Russian Terriers are:

  • Elbow Dysplasia and Hip Dysplasia: Hip and elbow dysplasia are extremely common in this breed. It occurs when the joint sockets do not properly form, which can cause their elbow or hip to pop out. If your dog has dysplasia, their limbs may be in pain or cause them to limp. Your vet can discuss what can be done to help manage the signs of pain and help decrease arthritis formation so that your Black Russian Terrier can live a long and happy life.
  • Bloat: Bloat is a life-threatening condition that will need to see a veterinarian right away. This occurs when your dog's stomach flips over and becomes enlarged. Many dogs with bloat are gagging and have a very bloated abdomen. This condition usually requires surgery to correct this disease. Without pet insurance, this can be a very costly procedure.
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): This eye diseases cause gradual deterioration of your dog's retina. When the disease starts, your dog may only seem blind at night. As the disease progresses, they will also lose their eyesight during the day. Many dogs will quickly adapt to their limited or lost vision as long as their surroundings remain the same.

All of these issues will need constant care and monitoring to help keep your Black Russian Terrier healthy and happy. If you notice anything wrong with your Black Russian Terrier, they should see a vet right away. Some issues can be life-threatening.
