I have a Cairn Terrier almost 7 years old. She is a little overweight and I do limit her treats. I feed her Wellness Healthy Weight and her treats are all Natural Wellness and Paul Newman apple treats. She goes for 3 walks a day, weather permitting. What should I do to get her to lose weight?
In my experience, the best way to lose weight in dogs is to increase exercise and decrease the amount of food by 10%. This can be easily done by simply cutting down the treats. Even all-natural treats contain empty calories. Personally, I find carrots to be a great “treat” for my dog that is low in calories and always available. Your 3 walks a day has allowed your Cairn Terrier to become accustomed to this routine. You might try changing the routine a bit, with other activities such as playing fetch with her or taking her for a longer walk in an area that she is not familiar with. Little changes in her daily routine will help give her additional ways to lose the weight. If after 3 months she still has not lost the weight, contact your veterinarian for some more suggestions. Your dog is in the age range where she may have low thyroid function, which is very common in dogs. A simple blood test can check for thyroid function.
Good luck and keep me posted.
