Volunteer with Pets!

Volunteering feels good. Not only does it increase self-confidence and general satisfaction, it also reduces social isolation and may even make you healthier. And you don’t have to do it alone, either. Consider these ways to involve your furry family members and volunteer with pets.

Donate Blood – Animals often need blood transfusions just like humans do. That blood comes from donors, and your cat or dog can become one of them. Ask your veterinarian about opportunities or search online to find an animal blood bank near you.

Reduce Stress – Volunteer pets are often used as therapy animals in hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. They provide much-needed social interaction while soothing frazzled nerves. You’ll need to become certified first, so look for a local or national group where you can take the necessary classes and evaluations. The best therapy pets are friendly, patient, calm and well behaved. Cats, dogs, birds, rabbits and even alpacas and llamas can all get in on the act.

Become a Foster Family – If your dog or cat is friendly to other animals, consider fostering a shelter pet in need of socialization or post-surgery recovery. Check with local animal rescues and shelters for fostering opportunities.

Philosopher and physician Albert Schweitzer once said, “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”
