The next time you are out shopping, contemplating new shoes or an upgraded television, consider how that money could be put to great use. There are many animal charities (local and nationwide) that support important practices, such as spaying and neutering, adoption, campaigns against cruelty, and training rescue dogs. Here are some great organizations to look at when shopping for a cause:
- The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals – www.aspca.org
The ASPCA supports adoption efforts, linking future pet owners to their pets as well as spreading information about animal cruelty. The ASPCA was the first humane organization in the western hemisphere and continues their mission today.
- 4 Paws for Ability – 4pawsforability.org
This organization “provides canine miracles for people with disabilities worldwide”. Their worthy organization trains and matches service dogs with people that have disabilities. Many become fast friends for children. The service dogs help both kids and adults live fuller lives and experience a level of independence that might not be possible without them.
- Search Dog Foundation – www.searchdogfoundation.org
The Search Dog Foundation trains rescued dogs to work with firefighters in emergency-response scenarios. They provide the service at no cost to the firefighting department, and they support important disaster-preparedness efforts.
Purse-strings a little tight? Consider donating time instead. Many local charities need dedicated volunteers. Find a worthwhile agency online or ask around to find the organization that’s right for you.
