Pets for Toddlers
To some people, having it all means family and a career. To others, it means having a small family member and a friendly pet! When you have a toddler, there are many concerns and risk factors within the home. Because of this, some families don’t have pets when they start having kids. However, for pet lovers, there are always solutions. Listed here are the top pets for kids.
- Dogs: Everyone knows that dogs are loyal and fun pets. However, be careful what breed you choose to adopt. The best dog breeds for kids are Bulldogs, Beagles, Bull terriers, Collies, Newfoundlands, Labrador retrievers and Golden retrievers.
- Cats: Cats are very independent creatures, of course, so they don’t require a ton of attention or training. This makes them ideal pets when your hands are full with a toddler. However, be sure that the particular cat you are thinking about adopting is a sociable cat that can get along with young children.
- Guinea Pigs: These pets are easily trained and very friendly. However, guinea pigs need to be handled gently, and they can be hurt if dropped. A good way for a toddler to play with a guinea pig is to have both your toddler and guinea pig down on the floor, in an area that is child-safe and free from guinea-pig hiding places that you can’t reach!
Other toddler-friendly pets include ferrets, fancy rats and hamsters. However, all pets have the ability to scratch and/or bite, so carefully consider the pros and cons before adopting a new family pet.
