Dogs on Boats
It’s summer time, which means people are migrating to the beaches and lakes. But can your pooch go, too?
With it being summertime and all, I recently found myself on a gorgeous lake during a bright, hot afternoon. As I was watching the boats and jet skis zoom by, someone in my party pointed to the water and yelled ,“Dog!” Naturally, I turned to look. There was a husky, who was as happy as a clam, sitting on the boat. So, dogs can ride on boats! But is it safe?
You can take steps for your pet to be prepared for a safe dog boat ride, just as if you were taking your animal on a long car ride. Here are some safety tips to ensure your pooch has fun on or in the water:
- Invest in a life jacket for your pooch. Just like their human companions, dogs can wear life preservers too! You should be able to find one at your local pet store, or a store around any large body of water (i.e. lake, river, ocean, etc…). Just like fitting a collar, make sure the life jacket fits properly—not too loose and not too tight. You should be able to place two fingers between the preserver and your dog’s body. Also, the life jacket should not be able to ride up when your pet gets into the water.
- Also, never tie your animal to the boat. Accidents do happen, and your dog should be able to swim away from the boat, if needed.
- Bring along water for your dog. If he’s out in the sun and wind all day, he can get dehydrated very quickly. Also, bring along bags for your pet’s messes, if it should have any.
Last, but not least, make sure that your pet enjoys being on the boat. Summer is the time to have fun, not be stressed out!
