Work out your pooch! Gone are the days when there were only fitness centers for humans. Have you heard? Now, your dog can have a gym membership too!
How does a massage sound? What about aromatherapy or a swimming session? If all these activities sound relaxing and delightful to you, how do you think they might sound to your pooch?! That’s right, there is now a fitness center devoted completely to serving our canine friends. Rocky’s Retreat in Orland, Florida, offers an array of gentle services such as massages, aromatherapy, acupressure and fitness swimming for dogs. Co-owner Sherri Cappabianca believes that these services are integral to the animal’s health. She has more than 1,000 hours of training in canine aqua therapy, small animal massage and acupressure.
There are many reasons why the four-legged clientele go to a retreat like this. For example, elderly dogs can benefit from a gentle massage. Hyperactive pooches can work out some energy swimming laps in the pool. The right center might also be good for canines that are put in stressful situations, such as service dogs and those that have suffered injuries. Safety is vital at the fitness center, especially in the pool. “One of us is in the pool at all times, and with our hands on the dog at all times," Cappabianca says.
The goal for many retreats like this is to be soothing for our pets. Along with a pool, they might also have a large outdoor play area, a space for “doggie day care” and treatment rooms. It will be interesting to see if the idea expands into other states.
Do you use services like this? And if so, do you see the benefits for your pooch?
