I do not have a dog. I know, it’s very sad, maybe even tragic. My schedule does not allow for spending enough quality time with a canine companion, so I am strictly a crazy cat (and bunny and gerbil) lady for now. However, many of my friends and neighbors have dogs, so I can get my dog breath fix whenever I need it.
Last spring, my husband and I began a new tradition. While he bakes and decorates sugar cookies for the neighbor’s human offspring, I bake canine-consumable cookies for their tail-wagging fur babies. If you’d like to bake a few crispy, crunchy treats for your own doggy delight, here is a simple recipe with which I have had great success.
Peanut Butter Oatmeal Banana Biscuits
- 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 cups oatmeal
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 ripe bananas, mashed
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
In a large bowl, combine flour and oatmeal. In a smaller bowl, combine milk, bananas and peanut butter. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix well. If dough is too wet, add flour until you reach firmer consistency.
Press dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters. Transfer cut out shapes onto another cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 300 F for one hour. Remove from oven and allow cooling and hardening. Refrigerate when cool.
If your dog does not like banana, you can substitute applesauce. I’ve also used carrot puree with dog-approved results.
