No, don’t eat that! Pets eat the craziest things. Learn how to make them stop!
Our pet cat, Mitzy, has her own “cat tower,” or very large scratching post. It is covered in different materials such as rope and carpet, which is intended to be very durable. However, the poor fabric didn’t stand a chance against the mighty Mitzy. She has utterly shredded the carpet, which did not surprise me. What did surprise me was when she started eating it. I have now joined the group of pet owners who have been completely baffled by their pet’s food choice. If you are in this group you may be wondering, “How do I make it stop?”
Another way to look at getting your pet to stop eating something unusual is view the challenge simply as teaching them pet tricks. In other words, you need to train them to stop eating the inappropriate thing. My cat prefers carpet. But other pets might like trash, shoes, boxes and more. To begin the training, startle your pet when they are eating the wrong thing. For example, when I saw Mitzy begin to eat the carpet, I clapped my hands very loudly and said “No!” This got Mitzy’s attention and she was so surprised, she forgot what she was eating. The key to this training is to be repetitive. Every time you see your pet eating the incorrect substance, you must always clap your hands. Other alternatives are simply raising your voice and saying “No!,” or using a spray bottle with water. The choice is up to you, but you must be consistent.
