Ask Seth: Shelter Dogs

I am looking for a family dog, but I have never adopted a dog before. Would you adopt a shelter dog? I always thought they were there because of behavior issues or they are bad dogs. Your thoughts?

My last 4 dogs were adopted out of shelters.   It has been a long time since I had a “puppy” in the house.  Shelter dogs can develop behavior issue while in the shelter, but the organization has the ways and means to work with the animals through that issue.   Many of the animals in the shelters are not there because they are bad, but have been left there because the owners didn’t know how to work with the dogs.  Some animals are left there to ease the financial burden of difficult situations (loss of a spouse, job, etc.).  Most animals want to love and be loved.  As a higher species, humans need to embrace this unconditional love by animals and save a pet from the shelter.  My dogs, and many that I have worked on and with, are rescues.  October is adopt a shelter dog month.  Use this time to find your family’s new best friend.

  1. There is nothing better than a shelter dog. All my life I have adopted dogs from the shelter and never ever had a bad experience. I presently have 4 dogs, all shelter dogs and they are a wonderful addition to my life. They are my family and are wonderfully behaved, loyal and perfect companions. If you want to do something good for yourself and save a dog's life at the same time, adopt from a shelter, you will never ever regret it.

  2. Hi Seth,
We adopted a pitbull (Ladee) when she was 6 years old from a shelter. Our Ladee is now 13 years old and we couldn't have asked for a more kinder most loving dog. Most of our friends at the dog park also rescued dogs from shelters and they all get along just fine! I hope the person looking for a dog goes to the shelter and picks out a fur-ever friend. Sandy & Ladee
