Ask Seth: Dog Will Not Eat
I have a little dog that will not eat dog food, what do I do?
First thing I would do is try to determine if the dog isn’t eating because he knows that you will give in and make him something else. This is usually the case when he is acting normally, and if he still takes his treats but turns his nose up to his food. Usually if this is the case, you simply need to just hold out longer than the dog can. Usually it takes a day or two but they begin to eat again. If he is not taking treats and not eating, I would have the vet take a look at him. This could be a sign of illness such as GI upset, infection, dental disease, pain, and/or kidney/liver issues. He may also be picky because he is being fed in a situation where he does not feel comfortable enough to eat, such as a new addition to the family or the bowl is too low or too high for him to each comfortably. Decreased appetite in dogs can be a sign of illness, so keep a very close eye on him and contact your vet if you have any concerns.
